Offering this Horrocks & Watson Springfield Home Potted Meats – Southport. Potted meats were a popular preserved food in the Victorian and Edwardian eras (late 19th to early 20th century). They consisted of finely chopped meat, seasoned and sealed with fat to prolong shelf life before refrigeration was common. Horrocks & Watson was one of many local butchers and food manufacturers in the North of England producing potted meats, pies, and preserved goods. Southport, being a seaside town, had a thriving trade in preserved foods for both locals and visitors.
This antique shallow pot is in very good condition with a strong black transfer, no cracks, and one tiny chip under the top rim on the left side.
Measures Approximately 3 1/2″ diameter x 1 1/2″ Tall
Please consider the images as the best part of my description.
Most pots have some level of crazing, may have spots of discoloration, light hairline cracks and minor chips and fleabites that should be considered patina, additions to character and do not detract from its display value. These are expected due to age, they were often buried for decades before being dug up and rescued.
This is an authentic antique advertising pot sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful antique pots for over 12 years from sources who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.
Interestingly, this same daughter’s husbands job moved them to London were we have enjoyed visiting our grandchildren and traveling the countryside antiquing.
On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.
Returns are not excepted on these rare authentic pieces but please contact if you have any questions.
