A charming and rare Victorian era ceramic pot lid from Thornton’s Celebrated Toilet Cream, originally produced in Manchester, England. Dating to the late 19th century, this beautifully preserved lid was used to seal a hair and scalp cream manufactured by A.P. Towle & Son (formerly W.T. Thornton), a company established in 1839. The use of the term “Toilet Cream” was standard for grooming and beauty products at the time—nothing to do with what we now call a “toilet.”

The lid reads:

“For the growth and restoration of the human hair… for preserving the natural beauty and softness of the hair, also for removing dandruff.”

This lovely piece of antique advertising features a well maintained black transfer lettering, a decorative tree trademark with “T.O.N.,” and pricing at 1 shilling, all adding to its period charm.

Measures approx – 2 3/4” Diameter x 1 1/2” tall

The lid is in good condition
with a chip on the front top left as pictured and a thin hairline crack across the front. The base is is in good condition with a chip on the inside and one on the bottom. Please view the images as the best description for this pot.

This authentic English antique advertising pot was sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful antique pots for over 12 years from sources who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.

Interestingly, this same daughter’s husbands job moved them to London were we have enjoyed visiting our grandchildren and traveling the countryside antiquing.

On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.
