This listing is for (1) heavily crazed Antique English Advertising Lidded Pot w/ Transfer Printed Base and Plain Lid, c. 1880. The front transfer reads:
Squire, Chemist
Oxford
This would have been a small ointment / cream / paste jar sold directly by Squire, an Oxford chemist. These were used for things like:
• Tooth paste or tooth powder
• Skin salves
• Cold creams
• Medicinal ointments
Unlike factory-made products, these were mixed, filled, and sold locally.
The base is in good condition with its colored crazing, a London stamp on the bottom, and one chip on the top. The lid is in good condition with a few minor chips on the outter edge of the top and one on the inside rim. Crazed and a lot of colored staining from years of burial, this pot is character filled and shows well. Please consider the images as the best part of my description.
Measures: 1 3/4” tall and 2 3/4” diameter
Most pots have some level of crazing, may have spots of discoloration, light hairline cracks and minor chips and fleabites that should be considered patina, additions to character and do not detract from its display value. These are expected due to age, use and let’s not forget they were often buried for decades before being dug up and rescued.
Returns are not accepted on these rare antique pieces.
