Offering this Antique English Areca Nut Tooth Paste lidded pot from the Army & Navy Co-Operative Society Limited. it is a rare pot.
The Army & Navy Co-operative Society Limited, established in 1871, was a British retail organization that catered primarily to military personnel and their families. Among its diverse product offerings was the Areca Nut Toothpaste, a popular dental care product in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Areca nut, derived from the Areca palm, was traditionally used in various cultures for its cleaning properties and was a common ingredient in toothpastes of that era. The Army & Navy Co-operative Society produced their own branded version, which was sold in ceramic pots featuring distinctive black transfer designs. These pots often depicted imagery of army and navy men holding flags, symbolizing the organization’s military association.
Measures approx. – 3” Diameter x 1 1/2” tall
The lid is in very good condition, with a strong black transfer and a few aging spots, with no chips or cracks. The base is in good condition with a few flat chips on the top lip rim that are covered when the lid is on. Please view the images as the best description for this pot.
This authentic English antique advertising pot was sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful antique pots for over 12 years from sources who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.
Interestingly, this same daughter’s husbands job moved them to London were we have enjoyed visiting our grandchildren and traveling the countryside antiquing.
On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.
