Antique English Victorian decorative ceramic tiles, each approximately 6 inches square. Sold as a Set
An unusual pair of architectural tiles with two distinctly different floral treatments, dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period, circa 1890–1910.
Tile A – Moulded Floral / Majolica Style
Cream-glazed earthenware tile with a stylized floral motif moulded in low relief. The flower is picked out in translucent green glaze with reddish-brown accents. The surface has extensive age-related crazing that gives the cream ground a wonderful antique character.
Tile B – Blue & White Transfer-Printed Floral
Cream-glazed earthenware tile decorated with an intricate blue transfer-printed flowering plant, framed by ornamental foliate corner motifs and circular border details. The finely drawn botanical decoration is characteristic of British decorative tiles of the late 19th/early 20th century.
The backs retain old mortar/setting material, indicating that these were once installed as architectural tiles rather than simply kept as decorative objects.
These are authentic antique pieces sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful antiques for over 12 years from friends who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.
On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.
