Offering this rare miniature antique ironstone pot from the late 1800’s, the label
reads:
• “Dr. Rooke’s Golden Ointment”
• “Discovered 1839”
• “Price 1s 1½” (1 shilling and 1½ pence)
• “Charles Rooke, M.D., Scarborough”
Dr. Charles Rooke (1802–1883) was a physician practicing in Scarborough, England. He developed the ointment around 1839, and it became widely marketed across Britain. The ointment was advertised as a treatment for several skin conditions, including:
• eczema
• psoriasis
• ulcers
• burns and wounds
• general skin irritation
Like many Victorian patent medicines, it was heavily advertised and sold through chemists and mail order.
It’s a beautiful miniature in good condition, light crazing throughout, one tiny chip on the top left side, and two chips on the underside bottom.
Measures Approximately 1 3/4” diameter x 1 1/4” tall.

I have been sourcing these wonderful antique advertising pieces for over 12 years from sources who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England.
I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.
On our many visits we have became friends with several of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.
