Beautiful antique butter pot. These were commonly used in Britain from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century to store and sell butter before widespread refrigeration and modern packaging.
“BUTTER” is in bold black lettering, indicating it was made specifically for butter rather than general kitchen storage.
“Rd No. 184986” is a British Registered Design number, not a patent number. This means the shape or decoration of the vessel was registered with the British government. Registration numbers in this range date to 1892, placing the design in the late Victorian period.
The stamp on the bottom is the trademark used by Pearson’s of Chesterfield, one of England’s best-known makers of salt-glazed and cream-glazed stoneware. The company became famous for producing:
* Butter crocks
* Preserve jars
* Marmalade jars
* Ginger beer bottles
* Kitchen storage jars
* Chemical and pharmaceutical stoneware
There are two grooves on the bottom which would have been for an optional leather strap at the time.
This butter pot is in very good condition with beautiful light crazing. Please view the images for your best description of this pot.
Measures: 4” tall x 1 1/2” diameter base x 2 3/4” at the widest point
