A wonderful antique Lactic-Bacilli Milk pot, made for The Express Dairy Co. Ltd. of England.
This tall white glazed ironstone dairy pot features black advertising lettering reading:
“LACTIC-BACILLI MILK
PREPARED BY
THE EXPRESS DAIRY CO. LTD.”
Lactic-bacilli milk was a cultured milk product associated with the growing interest in fermented milk and beneficial bacteria during the early 20th century.
The Express Dairy Company grew out of George Barham’s Express Country Milk Supply Company, established in London in 1864. Barham was an important innovator in bringing country milk into London by railway and promoting cleaner, more sanitary milk production.
This ironstone pot is in good condition with a strong transfer, scattered age coloring, and a chip on the bottom in the back. The lid is in very good condition. Wonderful addition or starter piece for a collector.
Measures approximately 4″ tall x 2″ diameter at base.
This is an authentic antique advertising pot sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful antique pots for over 12 years from friends who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.
Interestingly, this same daughter’s husbands job moved them to London were we have enjoyed visiting our grandchildren and doing serious antiquing.
On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.
