This antique stoneware caviar pot was used to package and store fresh caviar during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stoneware containers like this were favored because they were strong, reusable, and helped keep the contents cool before modern refrigeration became common. The printed instruction, “Fresh Caviare – Please Keep in a Cool Place,” reminded retailers and customers that caviar is highly perishable and required cool storage.

After the caviar was sold, many of these pots were repurposed in homes for storing kitchen staples such as spices, preserves, or dry goods, which is why relatively few survive in excellent condition.
