Beautiful antique covered stoneware butter or cheese crock featuring deeply embossed grape clusters, grape leaves and vines highlighted in rich cobalt blue against a soft blue-gray glaze.
The matching lid is especially attractive, with a complete raised grape-and-leaf wreath surrounding the center knob. The knob is impressed with the number “9,” which may represent a size or mold number.
This form and decoration closely resemble documented German-made stoneware crocks associated with M. Friedman & Co. around the turn of the 20th century. This particular example does not have a visible manufacturer’s or retailer’s mark on the base.
Approximate measurement: 8 1/4″ diameter x 5″ tall
The pot is in good condition. It shows some signs of use, has a small crack on one side of the lid, and one small chip on the outter rim of the lid. Please consider the images as the best description.
