Very rare antique Crosse & Blackwell Anchovy Paste advertising pot, dating to approximately the 1860s Victorian era.
This early English food container features black transfer-printed advertising reading “Anchovy Paste – For Sandwiches &c.” and identifies Crosse & Blackwell, 21 Soho Square, London. The transfer also references the company as purveyors by appointment.
During the Victorian era, Crosse & Blackwell became one of Britain’s best-known producers and exporters of preserved and prepared foods—pickles, sauces, soups, jams, preserved fish, potted foods and anchovy paste. Its products were exported around the world.
Made of cream/white glazed earthenware with a substantial rolled rim, this is a scarce and highly decorative piece of Victorian advertising, kitchenalia and antique food packaging.
The pot is in good condition with considerable age coloring and one chip on the back rim. Please view the images as your best description of this pot. This rare pot would be a great addition to your collection!

This is an authentic antique advertising pot sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful antique pots for over 12 years from sources who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.
Interestingly, this same daughter’s husbands job moved them to London were we have enjoyed visiting our grandchildren and traveling the countryside antiquing.
On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.
