This antique apothecary pot was used by J. Righton, Dispensing Chemist, Southport, for storing and dispensing ointments, creams, or medicinal preparations. The black transfer-printed lettering identifies the original pharmacy, reflecting a time when local chemists prepared prescriptions and remedies by hand for individual patients. These patented pots were valued for their non-porous, hygienic properties, making them ideal for pharmaceutical use.
Dispensing chemists were an important part of everyday healthcare before mass-produced medicines became commonplace. Apothecary jars like this would have been displayed on pharmacy shelves and repeatedly refilled as prescriptions were prepared.
The pot dates to the late Victorian to Edwardian period (circa 1880–1910), when containers like this were commonly used before glass jars and metal tins became widespread. The simple white glazed earthenware body with a matching lid is characteristic of pharmacy packaging from the era. The bottom base has the “TOOGOOD PATENT LONDON” stamp. This is a hard-to-find pot, a unique addition to your collection.
The base is in good condition with a strong transfer, some age spots, and some tiny chips on the inside top rim. The blank lid is in great condition. Please view the images as your best description of this rare pot.

This is an authentic antique English advertising pot sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful pots for over 12 years from friends who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.
Interestingly, this same daughter’s husbands job moved them to London were we have enjoyed visiting our grandchildren and antiquing.
On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.
