An antique English ceramic chemist’s or apothecary jar made for Savory & Moore, the celebrated London dispensing chemists and pharmaceutical firm. The transfer-printed inscription reads:
“SAVORY & MOORE
CHEMISTS TO THE KING
29 CHAPEL ST. BELGRAVE SQUARE, S.W.”
Savory & Moore traced its history to 1794, when Thomas Paytherus opened a chemist’s shop in New Bond Street. Thomas Field Savory joined in 1797, and Savory and Thomas Moore became partners in 1806. The firm subsequently became one of London’s prominent dispensing chemists. Its 29 Chapel Street, Belgrave Square branch opened in 1849, serving the fashionable Belgravia neighbourhood and nearby Buckingham Palace. The Chapel Street pharmacy remained in operation until 1968.
The base is in fair condition. There is a major chip on the right side as shown, as well as one on the bottom. When facing forward it displays well and the defects don’t show, as relected in the primary picture. There is an English patent incised on the bottom, TOOGOOD-Patent-London. The lid is in good condition.

Most pots have some level of crazing , may have spots of discoloration, light hairline cracks and minor chips and fleabites that only add to its character and do not detract from its display value. These are expected due to age, use and they were often buried for decades before being dug up.
