A charming antique Crosse & Blackwell ceramic anchovy paste jar with matching advertising lid, featuring the historic 21 Soho Square, London address.
The barrel-shaped ceramic jar has attractive ribbed detailing and black transfer-printed decoration. The front features the Crosse & Blackwell name above an elaborate heraldic crest, together with the Soho Square address.
The lid is wonderfully printed:
“ANCHOVY PASTE
FOR SANDWICHES
TOAST &c”
A lovely survivor from the days when everyday grocery products were sold in reusable and beautifully decorated ceramic containers. It would make an excellent addition to a collection of English advertising pots, English kitchenalia, or Crosse & Blackwell memorabilia.
Measures 3 3/4” tall x 3” diameter mid section x 1 3/4” diameter at base
This piece is in very good condition with some scattered age spots, light crazing, and a very dark and clear transfer on both the pot and lid. This is a lovely clean example of a rarely seen English Advertising pot with this rare barrel shape and a printed lid, dating around 1900. Please view the images as your best description of this pot.
These are authentic antique advertising pots sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful antique pots for over 12 years from sources who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.
Interestingly, this same daughter’s husbands job moved them to London were we have enjoyed visiting our grandchildren and traveling the countryside antiquing.
On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.
