This charming pair of small glazed stoneware dishes is characteristic of French country tableware, made for serving individual portions of butter at the table. In France these small vessels are generally described as “beurriers individuels” (individual butter dishes), rather than “butter pats,” the term more commonly used by Americans.
Each piece has a rounded, slightly irregular hand-finished form with a rich brown exterior glaze and creamy ivory glazed interior. The small variations in shape and glaze are consistent with traditional utilitarian pottery rather than highly standardized factory porcelain.
Each dish measures approximately 2 1/4” diameter x 1 1/4″ tall.
