This decorative ceramic tobacco box was produced as a promotional item for The Balkan Sobranie Cigarettes, one of Britain’s most prestigious luxury cigarette brands. Founded in London in the late 19th century, Balkan Sobranie became internationally renowned for its high-quality oriental tobacco blends and distinctive packaging, making it a favourite among discerning smokers throughout the early 20th century.

The box features detailed black transfer-printed scenes promoting “The Finest Yenidje Tobacco.” Yenidje (now Genisea in northeastern Greece) was famous for producing exceptionally aromatic Oriental tobacco, regarded as one of the finest cigarette tobaccos in the world. Balkan Sobranie built its reputation by blending this prized leaf with other premium tobaccos to create its celebrated mixtures.

The illustrations depict traditional Balkan landscapes, tobacco cultivation, and local figures, reflecting the exotic imagery that was central to the brand’s marketing. The number “100” on the end of the box indicates it was designed to hold 100 cigarettes, making it both a practical storage container and an attractive countertop display piece. There is a manufactured in England stamped on the bottom.

Measures Approx 6” long x 4” wide x 2 1/2” tall

This box has an excellent preserved transfer on all sides, and is in overall very good condition. It has crazing and age coloring mostly on the inside and bottom. Please view the images as the best description of this plate.

This is an authentic antique advertising piece sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful antiques for over 12 years from friends who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the exciting opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.

On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.

Returns are not accepted on these rare authentic pieces but please contact if you have any questions.
