VERY RARE ** Antique Confection of Senna – Parke’s Drug Store, London, c. 1900

$295.00

1 in stock

This is a late Victorian English chemist’s ointment or electuary jar, produced as advertising stoneware for Parke’s Drug Stores Ltd. It is much more than a simple medicine jar—it’s an early piece of pharmacy advertising.

The pot reads:
* Confection of Senna
* (Lenitive Electuary)
* Prepared according to the British Pharmacopoeia
* Dose: One or two teaspoonfuls
* Parke’s Drug Stores Ltd.
* Half Moon St., N.W.
* Branches All Over London

Confection of Senna was a standard British medicine used as a gentle laxative. It was a sweet herbal paste made primarily from:
* Senna leaves or pods
* Figs
* Tamarind
* Prunes
* Coriander
* Sugar or Syrup

Parke’s Drug Stores Ltd. was a chain of chemists operating in London during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their flagship premises were at Half Moon Street, London NW, with numerous branch locations throughout the city. Instead of plain pharmacy containers, they often commissioned beautifully printed advertising jars like this.

This pot is in very good condition with a fantastic ornate transfer, one chip on the bottom and there is a very small, tight glaze line on the right top rim. This is an extremely rare pot and so well preserved. Great bathroom decor or to display with your collection!

Measures Approx 3 1/4” tall w/lid x 2 1/2” across the middle x 2” base

This is an authentic antique advertising pot sourced during my recent buying trip to England. I have been sourcing these wonderful antique pots for over 12 years from sources who are actually digging them up in ancient rubbish sites all over England. I purchased my first antique Advertising pot when my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in England in the 1980’s. Our daughter was born there and we enjoyed living in England so much we often went back to visit after returning to the US.

Interestingly, this same daughter’s husbands job moved them to London were we have enjoyed visiting our grandchildren and traveling the countryside antiquing.

On our many visits we have became friends with many of the “diggers” excavating the ancient dumpsites all over the UK and now source thousands of pots from them every year. I still love the charm they add to every room they are placed in.

Returns are not accepted on these rare authentic pieces but please contact if you have any questions.
